Communicating Medical Information To Children

We created this website, Difficult Conversations with Children, to synthesize information that can be used as a resource for caregivers navigating difficult conversations with their children related to death and illness.

By the age of 18, about 40% of American children will experience at least one potentially traumatizing event (Perry, 2017). The likelihood of a traumatizing effect occurring makes it essential for parents to prepare and educate themselves on how to navigate the difficult conversations which come along with these devastating events. The conversations both during and following these situations can completely change the long-term effects of these events on children’s mental health. Failure to communicate in an appropriate way can result in increased stress, anxiety, and the adoption of harmful coping mechanisms. This makes it necessary for parents to educate themselves on effective communication, which can be overwhelming especially in the midst of a crisis. This is where our website comes in. Difficult Conversations with Children puts together a vast library of information and resources where parents can learn the most effective ways to navigate these conversations and better understand the various factors that impact a child's experience in health conversations.
